Micro$oft Linux Attack Again

Well it seems that Micro$oft is at it again, its Linux-threating mode that is. Once again, Steve Ballmer is showing his total arrogant mindset. Linux infringes on M$ patents? Sure… coming to a company that is a “photocopier”… Open source is not free? Steve Ballmer and his stupid company does not understand the difference between open source software and free software. Well, what do you expect? It’s Micro$oft. They have all the money to burn yet they still don’t get it.

“But I don’t want to eliminate in your minds the notions of risk of pricing that comes from competition with open source. We are higher priced, but we bring greater value,”

What value? Being locked-in to their proprietary products? Sounds like a rip-off to me.

“We have done very well versus Linux on the desktop and on the server, and I am hopeful that we will build share, particularly in web servers and high-performance clusters, from Linux in the next year,”

How could you say that Mr. Ballmer? With your company-sponsored studies? Hah! Linux adoption on desktop is happening, slowly but surely. Linux is very ready for the enterprise, in fact it can be deployed for mission-critical systems. And a Linux server is much more flexible. Windows is non-existent on high performance clusters. Most of the boys in the HPC space use Linux, BSD or any Unix variant, not Windows.

Ballmer really needs to come and smell the coffee, bigtime.

Micro$oft != Inoperability

I came by this article. Man, Micro$oft is using its well-known FUD machine again. IBM restricting choice? Heck, that just BS. I won’t blame IBM for championing the OpenDocument format. Why support an “open” (duh!) document file format where the underpinnings rely on Window$ technology. Micro$oft has a delusional idea of interoperabilty. For them, interoperability means vendor lock-in (to them). Besides, their creation of Office Open XML is pretty stupid, well, what do you expect from a company that what to be the ONLY one in the computing industry. Goodness…

Open Source Cola :D

Wow, this is really neat, open source cola! :D I always wondered how to make cola. Well now, I know :D I think Coca-cola and Pepsi are trembling on their feet now (not :) ) ) But kinda cool :D

Bill Gates: M$ makes strong software

It’s all here. This is one of the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard from M$. It is also the most blatant lie I have ever heard. For the sake of argument, Micro$oft Window$ is flawed due to poor design. Because of that, Window$ is inherently insecure (a cesspool for viruses, adware, spyware, dialers and other malware). Technically speaking, Micro$oft makes a piece of crappy software. In short, Bill Gates is very stupid when he said his company makes strong software. That said, one is better off with FOSS.

Lunacy: Micro$oft’s Latest Patent Proposal

Well, it seems that a new blog entry is in order. Recently, I read on LXer that favorite software company (duh) filed a new patent claim to the USPO (United States Patent Office). As described by Groklaw, M$ is seeking a patent for an idea of a modular operating system heavily controlled by Digital Rights Management (DRM). Now, here are my views on this:

  1. It is a very preposterous claim.

The idea of a modular operating system already exist (in the form of BSD Unix, Linux and OpenSolaris, just to name a few). Sort of a rip-off, really.

  2. It shows the really greedy nature of Micro$oft.

Think about it: the OS can be designed to be very crippled to the bone from the day of purchase. To make it usable or have additional features, one must pay for very added functionality. I have to say, corporate greediness at its horrid grandeur. Monetary gains at the expense of customer satisfaction.

  3. A possible privacy and security risk.

I know to well that DRM can be a security and privacy risk, take for example the whole Sony XCF Rootkit fiasco. Also what are the guarantees to protect my rights to computer privacy and security? We can never know, because it is a well-known fact that M$ is a proprietary software company. Proprietary meaning they might be hiding something.

I don’t know if the brains of the guys behind this working at all or decaying because of the excessive greed in their neurological pathways. Even a sledgehammer won’t work I guess :) )

Choose freedom. Choice FOSS.
